Beat the Meat Week

No it's not what you think...  I'm going to try to go an entire week vegetarian.  So I'll still be eating eggs and cheese but I'll be forgoing the flesh of the animal for the week.  I think it'll be a good chance to try to clear out the system  Meanwhile I can work on re-dedicating myself to my 1/2 marathon training plan.

I signed up for a 1/2 on a spur of the moment and I haven't been following through on my training.  So with an abysmal week this week (only one run) I'm going to try to re-focus on it.  Also with soccer at a close for the season it gives me more free nights to get the shorter base building/maintaining runns in.  Hopefully that'll help with my weight issues.

Off to cook my first veg meal of the week!

7/12- It's Been Too Long!

So I've slacked pretty thoroughly in my updates.  Many changes have been wrought since the last time I wrote.  I've taken the new job I was so heartsick about and moved!  I've found a new soccer team here and trying to get out and make friends.  It can be lonely but I've had the support of my family and my friends.  Despite the distance between myself and those people I still feel close.

More importantly I haven't given up running.  Despite some recent struggles with my weight I'm trying to stay fit by training for a 1/2 marathon.  In the interm I've run the following races to stick with my plan of running a race every month (except for February when it got snowed out)

March: 1/4 Marathon - Time 66:57 - Pace 10:19
April: Farmington Trail Run 5K - Time  - Pace
May: Coast Guard Duathalon (Run 2, Bike 12, Run 2) - Time 18:20, 62:01, 18:16 - Pace 9:10, 5:15, 9:08
June: Scramble 5K - Time 30:27 - Pace 9:48
July: 4 on the 4th  - Time 40:33- Pace 10:08
August: Beach to Beacon 10K - Time 60:45 - Pace 9:47

For the moment bringing my average race pace to 9:53

Wallflower Oppurtunities

No one could ever claim that I'm a wallflower.  I'm too loud, too bright not to at least get noticed by everyone walking by.  I love bright colors and I make loud noises and I adore every minute of it.

Except days like today.  I got a job offer.  A great job offer.  My boss's boss recommended me for a one off chance to do something really great and all I can wish for is that no one ever noticed me.  I like my life where I am.  Yes, I wanted a new job something exciting and challenging.  Yes, this will be that.  But I never actually wanted to move.  I never wanted to say goodbye to the friendships that I've formed and the bonds made and the life I've built here.  And that's what this job is.  A farewell to all of that.

So rather than being ecstatic about the chance to do something wonderful I'm crying to myself wishing I had been content with what I had.

Major Excitement, More Changes and Minor Disappointments

Major Excitement:
I'm going to India!  I'm beyond excited about the prospect and can't wait for my first visit to this wonderful country.  I'm traveling with one of my favorite people in the whole world and being taken in by her gracious friends.  The trip is to start with a wedding and to continue with a whirlwind a tour of four cities near New Delhi.  Not much gets me more excited than an upcoming trip and the excellent company that I get to travel in.

More Changes:
It's been a while since I've posted.  In the interim I watched a documentary Vegucated.  It was an interesting film directed by a woman who has taken on a vegan life style and follows three New Yorkers as they attempt the same for six weeks.  It was pretty interesting, specifically the information regarding the resources used in the production of animal products.  I always knew we were destroying our world but never realized how quickly.  It also spoke of and showed video of some of the conditions that the animals live under.  Needless to say I almost had to turn off the movie from nausea.

The culmination of all of this is that I'm in the process of trying out a vegetarian life style, with the goal of eventually eating vegan for a month.  We'll see how vegetarianism goes but so far so good.  It's not hard to avoid meat when images of the living conditions of livestock flash through my head every time I see a burger or a steak.  I bought two cookbooks, one vegetarian, one vegan.  I tried out the first recipie that struck my fancy from the vegan book, a shitake mushroom and bok choy rice noodle soup.  It was tasty but for the minor exception that at the very end I went to add the ground black pepper and misjudged "to taste" when the lid nearly came off and I dumped a ton of pepper into it.  I tried to skim it off the top and partially succeeded.  I ended up straining the veggies and adding new broth in an attempt to rescue it.  It didn't turn out too bad.

Minor Disappointments
This month's race was cancelled.  I signed up and even corralled additional friends into joining in and this morning found out that it was snowed out.  It doesn't look like I'll manage a race a month this year, but not for lack of trying.  This was actually the snow date for the race.  The race had already been snowed out once!  Maybe I'll just try to get in 12 races in 12 months.  We'll see.

A Silence of Three Parts

Patrick Rothfuss is a genius.  Period.

I just finished reading Wise Man's Fear in an epic one week adventure of late nights and avoided social gatherings so that I could drink in the story of Kvothe the Arcane.  It was worth every missed dinner, tired morning and lost hour of sleep.  The author's ability to weave his stories into artful fiction are beyond reproach.  Told from the point of view of Kvothe, the main character, the story is the second in a trilogy that wends it's way through the story of his life.

There's little I can say to sum up the book that hasn't been printed on it's dust jacket.  The sheer epic of his adventures are impossible to diminish into a sentence or two.  What I can say is that the book had me both laughing out lout and crying.  The emotions and the emotional realizations of the characters are extremely hard hitting.  Nothing is shied away from.  Kvothe is a hero but there is no effort to shy away from the more tarnished aspects of the character which makes the reader fall in love with him even more.  In fact the honesty with which he tells his own story is one of the reasons I'm so drawn along in the narrative.  I can't help but become submerged in his reality. I patiently await "Doors of Stone" and the conclusion of Kvothe's tale.

Leaving with a quote from the book:
"It had flaws, but what does that matter when it comes to matters of the heart?  We love what we love.  Reason does not enter into it.  In many ways, unwise love is the truest love.  Anyone can love a thing because.  That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket.  But to love something despite.  To know the flaws and love them too.  That is rare and pure and perfect."

1/12 - Ringing in the New Year Right

I'm starting the year out right with my first race of the year on the first day of the year!  I ran a 5K this morning so I'm trying to keep up the great success that I had last year with my 12 races in 12 months plan.  And this year my dad is doing it with me along with some other super supportive friends!

I beat last year's January time of 33:07 by more than two minutes with a finish time of 30:50.  I'm hoping to bring down my 5K average of 30:15 (averaged over 10 5Ks) from last year to under 30 minutes.  In other running news I'm hoping to top my mileage total and break 300 this year as I fell short coming in at 296 for the year.

Also on a bright note I'm starting the year less round.  Last year I rang in at ~217 I'm starting the new year 22 pounds lighter at ~195 which is great.  So I'm also hoping to continue loosing weight and finish the year strong with 20 pounds of weight loss.

Hope everyone enjoys the new year and reaches their goals.
